Ethnic Garments:
Navy blue men's robe and burgundy women's robe
Date: 2002
Courtsey of President and Mrs. Rawlins
A chapan is basically a T-shaped
men's coat with slightly angled shoulder line, straight fit. These garments are intended to be worn loose as outer garments over other robes. The matching woman's vest is slightly fitted and features tulips in the design. Both robes are heavily embroidered with arabesque motifs combining satin stitch, couching, lin work and sequins. The robes were presented to President and Mrs. Rawlins by visiting dignitaries from Uzbekistan.
Contemporary Garment:
Navy blue wool crepe embroidered sheath dress and jacket
Date: 2003
Courtsey of Patricia Fischer
The embroidery on this sheath dress and jacket were inspired by the embroidery motifs featured on President and Mrs. Rawlin's Uzbekistan robes. The embroidery interpretation by embroiderer Patricia Fishcer softens the traditional design and combines elements of applique, trimwork, and machine embroidery.
